Assessments for Children
Behavioural Assessment
A behavioural assessment for your child or teenager looks at how your child’s behaviour compares to other Australian children of their age. It uncovers their strengths, competencies and problems and provides guidance as to how to support the child to engage in positive behaviours. The behavioural assessment may involve the completion of psychological questionnaires, interviews with the family, a discussion with the school and observation of the child’s behaviours. You will be encouraged to attend a follow-up session where your psychologist will explain the outcome of the assessment, and you will have the option of having a report prepared.
Intelligence (IQ) Assessment
An intelligence assessment measures the child’s IQ (intelligence quotient). It provides detailed information about their strength and weaknesses in memory, verbal and perceptual skills. At Spectrum, we use the latest version of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) which is suitable for children aged between six and sixteen years. The assessment involves the child completing multiple activities and questions at the clinic. A comprehensive report is provided to you to conclude this assessment.
Trauma/Attachment Assessment
The trauma and attachment assessment involves completing a developmental history, family history, and completion of the Trauma and Attachment Beliefs Scale (TABS). The TABS focuses on an individual’s relationship history, and assesses beliefs – about self and others – that are related to five needs commonly affected by traumatic experience:
- Safety
- Intimacy
- Trust
- Control
- Esteem
Functional/Developmental Assessment
A functional or developmental assessment measures your childs’ adaptive behaviours and life skills. It looks at their developmental level as compared to other children their age. This assessment will measure your child’s strengths and weaknesses using the Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System II (ABAS-II) and provides information about:
- Communication
- Community Use
- Functional Academics
- Home Living
- Health and Safety
- Leisure
- Self-care
- Self-direction
- Social
- Occupational
Autism is a lifelong developmental condition that affects how an individual interacts with their environment and with other people. Spectrum are proud to provide assessment using clinical tests for both adults and children that are widely recognised as gold standard among health and educational professionals.
Assessments for Adults
Intelligence (IQ) Assessment
An intelligence assessment measures your IQ (intelligence quotient). It provides detailed information about your strengths and weaknesses in memory, verbal and perceptual skills. At Spectrum, we use the latest version of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) which is suitable for people aged sixteen and older. The assessment involves completing multiple activities and questions, which takes approximately 90-120 minutes. A comprehensive report is provided to you to conclude this assessment.
Disability Assessments
Disability assessments are available, and vary depending on your individual assessment needs. Such assessments can assess intellectual disability status, confirm mental health diagnoses, or examine psychological functioning on capacity to engage in vocational activities. Spectrum endeavors to work collaboratively with government agencies such FaCS, Centrelink and Medicare to maintain high standards of care.
Diagnostic Assessment
A diagnostic assessment aims to assess for mental health diagnoses. A diagnostic assessment may include multiple interviews, completion of psychological questionnaires and collaboration with the treating GP and other health specialists. You can request a report following this assessment.
